It seems like everyone needs a cup of coffee to get going in the morning. But did you know that the drink that helps you wake up can also benefit your health? While you shouldn’t consume excessive amounts of coffee, this drink has its own set of unique benefits that can help you lead a healthier life. Brew a cup of your favorite brand of coffee and read about what this beverage can do for you.

  • Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, which hunt down cell-destroying free radicals inside your body.
  • One study found that people who drank 1 to 3 cups of coffee per day lowered their risk of diabetes. It’s important to note, however, that people at risk of diabetes should carefully watch the amount of sugar and cream they put in their coffee. In addition, make sure that you still get a proper amount of sleep every night. If you’re worried about sleep, don’t worry – decaf coffee can still lower your risk of diabetes.
  • Regular consumption of coffee has been consistently linked to a lower rate of Parkinson’s disease. Some studies have found that the caffeine in coffee can reduce the risk of Parkinson’s by as much as 80%.
  • Coffee can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Research published in 2009, conducted in Finland and Sweden with 1400 participants, found that subjects who consumed between 3 and 5 cups of coffee per day were 65% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s or dementia.
  • Research suggests that coffee can prevent heart rhythm disturbances, a contributing factor in strokes and heart attacks. A study involving 130,000 subjects found that drinking 1 to 3 cups of coffee per day reduced the odds of being hospitalized for abnormal heart rhythms by 20%.
  • Studies have found that coffee can also reduce the risk of the following conditions: colon cancer (by 25%), cirrhosis (80%), gallstones (almost 50%) and heart disease (25% reduction in mortality risk for women). Coffee has been used to help treat headaches and asthma, and its anti-bacterial and anti-adhesive characteristics can guard against cavities.
